Home Sweet Home
Soon, Joan Spoltore won’t have to worry about carrying trash to the curb or hiring someone to clean her gutter, rake her leaves or cut her lawn. Spoltore is about to move into a condominium at the Villages of Pine Valley, a 55-plus active adult residential community at 8550 Verree Road.

Spoltore chose a fourth-floor, 966- square-foot condo with one bedroom, one and a half baths, a den and a balcony. She is happy with her large living room, kitchen, walk-in closet and powder room, plentiful cabinets, 10-foot-high ceiling, gas fireplace and the windows that will allow plenty of natural light. The condo faces east, and she’ll be able to see the sun rise.

Right Up Their Alley
It’s been more than a half century, but Tony and Pat Florkowoski still have it. The former bowling aficionados are at it again, thanks to the Nintendo Wii — a new game console that allows participants to physically act out various sports, including bowling, with a remote-control paddle.

For the majority of their lives, the husband- and-wife team have shared a mutual love for strikes and spares. Now they are living in the Villages of Pine Valley — a 55-and-older active-adult community — and have a chance to strike up some fun with the neighborhood’s new Wii bowling league, which offers various tournaments once a week.

Laughter is the best medicine, says Holy Redeemer geriatrician
A man walks into a psychiatrist’s office and screams: “I’m a wigwam, I’m a teepee! I’m a wigwam, I’m a teepee!” And the psychiatrist says: “Sit down, you’re two tents.”

Dr. Fabius, medical director of geriatrics at Holy Redeemer Hospital and Medical Center, visited the residents at The Villages at Pine Valley to explain the importance of laughter and humor in people’s lives.

Preventing heart attack after years of inactivity and unhealthy eating
It’s never too late. That’s the message Dr. Andrew Mustin, a cardiologist with the Cardiovascular Center at Holy Redeemer Hospital and Medical Center, tells those who think they can’t prevent heart problems because they have lived a lifetime full of unhealthy eating and little exercise.

Virginia Simon, clubhouse manager for The Villages at Pine Valley, agrees. “Fitness is vitally important for maintaining good health as people age,” she says. “That is why The Villages’ newly opened clubhouse includes a fully equipped fitness center and a swimming pool. Our close proximity to Pennypack Park also provides our residents with a wonderful environment in which to enjoy outdoor activities such as walking or biking. A good combination of low-intensity activities like walking, swimming, and yoga, and moderate-intensity activities like weight training and biking are a great way for older adults to get in shape and maintain their health.”
